25/26
Week 10: PBL

Objectives

  • Introduce Problem-Based Learning (PBL)
  • Provide the essentials needed to engage with PBL effectively
  • Apply PBL through reverse engineering for forensic artefacts
  • Develop independent learning skills for continuing professional development

25/26
Week 10: PBL

What is PBL?

  • PBL reverses the traditional teaching model
  • Learning begins with a problem, not pre-delivered content
  • The focus is not simply solving the problem
  • Instead, students identify and seek the knowledge needed to approach it

25/26
Week 10: PBL

Core Principles of PBL

  • Start with the problem, not the theory

  • Learn within a realistic context

  • Focus on:

    • What do we not know?
    • How do we find out?
    • How do we apply it?
  • Approaches:

    • Open Discovery
    • Guided Discovery

25/26
Week 10: PBL

Aims of PBL

  • Reduce information overload
  • Encourage self-directed learning
  • Strengthen critical thinking and interpersonal skills

25/26
Week 10: PBL

Why It Matters Professionally

  • Cybersecurity and digital forensics require continuous learning

  • Professionals must:

    • Adapt to evolving technologies
    • Make decisions under uncertainty
    • Work both independently and collaboratively
  • PBL prepares you for these realities

25/26
Week 10: PBL

PBL Outcomes

  • Problems may not be fully resolved

    this is expected

  • The goal is to:

    • Identify knowledge gaps
    • Direct learning to address them
  • Learning is embedded within a realistic context

25/26
Week 10: PBL

What PBL is Not

  • Case-based learning only

focus is on the problems identified, not the case itself

  • Just problem solving

emphasis is on learning needs, not final answers

25/26
Week 10: PBL

Roles in PBL (Idealy)

  • Facilitator - guides discussion and learning
  • Chairperson - keeps the group focused
  • Scribe - records ideas and outcomes
  • Group members - contribute, question, and explore

25/26
Week 10: PBL

The PBL Process

  1. Clarify unfamiliar terms and concepts
  2. Define the problem(s)
  3. Brainstorm possible explanations
  4. Organise ideas into tentative solutions
  5. Identify learning objectives
  6. Conduct independent study
  7. Share and evaluate findings
    • Refine explanations
    • Identify remaining gaps
    • Reference sources

25/26
Week 10: PBL

PBL Tips

  • Collaborate, do not compete
  • Resist the urge to jump straight to solutions
  • Focus on identifying what you need to learn
  • Be reflective
  • Accept that different groups will take different approaches
  • Do not be intimidated by others

uncertainty is part of the process

25/26
Week 10: PBL

Summary

  • PBL is a student-driven approach to learning
  • Learning starts with problems, not content
  • The focus is on developing independent, reflective professionals
  • You will experience PBL through practical scenarios

25/26
Week 10: PBL

PBL Activity: Sandboxie Investigation

  • Groups of 3-5

    • What do you not know?
    • What needs to be investigated?
    • Where might evidence exist?
  • After 1 Hour: Group presentation:

Please review you activities from here

25/26

- Move beyond passive, lecture-based delivery

- **Being taught directly** > the facilitator guides, students drive the learning
