Accessibility and Navigation

There are several ways to navigate the chapters (i.e., sessions).

The sidebar on the left provides a list of all chapters/sessions. Click any chapter/session title to load that page.

If the window is too narrow-particularly on mobile-the sidebar may not appear automatically. In that case, use the menu icon () at the top-left of the page to open or close the sidebar.

The arrow buttons at the bottom of the page navigate to the previous or next chapter.

The left and right arrow keys on the keyboard can also be used to navigate to the previous or next chapter.

Top menu bar

The menu bar at the top of the page provides icons for interacting with the book. The icons displayed depend on how the book was generated.

IconDescription
Opens and closes the chapter listing sidebar.
Opens a picker to choose a different color theme.
Opens a search bar for searching within the book.

Tapping the menu bar scrolls the page to the top.

Each book has a built-in search system. Pressing the search icon () in the menu bar, or pressing the S key on the keyboard, opens a box for entering search terms. Typing terms shows matching chapters and sections in real time.

Clicking any of the results jumps to that section. Use the up and down arrow keys to navigate the results, and press Enter to open the highlighted section.

After loading a search result, the matching search terms are highlighted in the text. Click a highlighted word or press the Esc key to remove the highlighting.

You can change the mdBook theme using the theme icon at the top-left of the page. Additionally, there is a toggle for the table of contents and a search tool.
